I was lucky to go see an advanced screening of 300 this Tuesday and I thought it was awesome. It's not exactly Oscar worthy but it's worth paying full price for and is a far better movie than Gladiator was. It was a bit on the long side at nearly 2 hours but it didn't feel like it was either too long or too short, it was just the right length. The pacing was very good, never a dull moment and the battle scenes were incredible.
300 is loosley based on Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name and depicts the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C and the defense of a narrow mountain pass by 300 Spartans and allies against a much, much larger force of invading Persians. Although the movie and graphic novel depicts an actual historical battle don't go into it expecting a historically accurate movie or one that even pretends to be historically accurate. The graphic novel took liberties with the historical events and the movie being based on the graphic novel take liberties with its souce material. But this movie is no Titanic or Pearl Harbor which were love stories set in the backdrop of historical events, a chick flic 300 is not. It's very solidy set in its historical settings and the Battle of Thermopylae is very much the primary focus of the movie.
A bit of warning, this movie is very graphic and violent. There was a lot of blood flying around during the battle scenes along with flying limbs and heads. Along with a couple of nude scenese, this movie definitely not for the squeemish or prudish but if you enjoy a good action movie and don't mind a bit of blood and nudity then this movie is definitely for you. If you can, I highly recommend seeing on an IMAX screen, it's well worth it. The screening I went to was shown on an IMAX screen and the movie was digitally remastered for IMAX and it was incredible. 300 really took full advantage of the IMAX format and it was really something to see those great battle scenes on a massive IMAX screen. In short, go see it!
