OK, so Ang Lee's 2003 HULK was almost universally considered a flop. The only saving grace IMO was Jennifer Connolly. (rawr) So when I heard they were making another one, my inital reaction was "Ugh, more screen fodder." Then, without warning, all that changed...
It was announced that Edward Norton was cast to play Bruce Banner/HULK. IMO, Ed Norton is one of the best actors of his generation, so I figured that if he signed off on the script that it was probably pretty good. Then I find out that not only is he starring in it, Norton wrote the screenplay for the film, based on a story by Zak Penn (writer of X2 and XMen: Last Stand). Turns out that Norton is a big fan of the HULK character. The movie will be directed by Louis Leterrier whose most notable credits are for directing The Transporter and The Transporter 2, arguably some of the best action films of recent years.
Then the brightest light from the heavans shown down upon the film. It is NOT a sequel, but a restart. That's right. Taking a cue from Batman Begins, the studio figured that if a preceding movie was crap, you needent continue to pile crap on top of it to continue a franchise. This movie will retell HULK's origins back to the Gamma Bomb explosion as seen in the original comics. Add in a well rounded cast and more realistic CGI (at least, as realistic as a giant green guy can be) and this is looking to be a vast improvement to the prior movie.
Then came another surprise. Robert Downey, Jr. is slated to make an appearance as Tony Stark. I doubt that Iron Man will show up, but supposedly Marvel is going to be doing this in their future movies. Other characters will make brief appearances in films to eventually lead up to cross-over films. Also, this may be a glimpse to the upcoming Avengers live-action film.
So I'm going to give this one the benefit of the doubt, and I suggest you do the same.
That is all.
