Ladies and gents,
I see on Stargatehero.net that we have the 111st Wraith Squadron. On the SG-11 website, I see our squadron called the 1011th Wraith Wringers Squadron. I ask the group, or perhaps it is the SG-11 Team Lead that answers this, what is the real name of the SG-11 F-302 Fighter Squadron?
Do I assume that based on the name, we are either supposedly based on the BC-304 Daedalus or perhaps on Atlantis? Thus should the squadron have some sort of Stargate Atlantis or Daedalus insignia on the flight suit?

I vote that now is our chance to rebuild from the ground Up. We go with 111th and start from there. Ive never been keen on the wraith wringers myself.

Thank goodness! I didn't like Wraith Wringers either.
Maybe we need some people to post some ideas and then have a poll?

Wraith Radiers isn't bad. Anyone else?
You don't have to be SG-11 or 111st to contribute!

What about painting the fighters black, with stealth style markings (ala the Blackbird) and calling them the Black Death? In space it would also be almost the same as a cloaking device without all the extra hardware and mass. Don't forget, In Space, nobody can hear you sneak up behind them and blow them out of existance.

In the beginning, the 111th Wraith Squadron was a Helicopter squadron because SG-11 was a army corp of engineers group. When the original members of SG-11 broke from SG command.net, I think they took their squadron with them. Now that SG-11 is starting over, It's up to you and Dan Kim whether or not this SG-11 has F-302's or not and what you name it. Good luck.

I believe the F-302 is still called a 'Death Glider'
However, it should be noted that any aircraft in the aresenal of the US military which has a nick name has just that, a nick name. For instance, 'Raptor' is not the official designation of the F-22. It is an official and widely used nick name. But the proper designation is F-22. The mere naming of planes stems from our long standing alliances with the UK. The RAF, RN, RM, etc. do OFFICIALLY designate their air craft with names, but the USAF, USN, USMC, etc. do not. For example, P-51D (Mustang Mk. IV)
USAAC designation: North American P-51 D
RAF designation: North American Mustang M(ar)k IV
I'm basing this on the fact of the real world and that SG has always strived to stay true to reality when it comes to military procedure, protocol, uniforms, tactics, etc.

You guys can come up with whatever name you want your squadron named and can fly pretty much whatever you want to pilot. The only thing we designate is the number of the squadron and that is tied to the regional team number. Typically the squadrons are 3 digits and have the team number at the beginning. For example:
SG-2 = 201st SFS Drrkstar Titans
SG-3 = VMFS 301 Shadow Wolves (USMC)
SG-4 = 401st ESFS Death Dealers
SG-5 = VMFS 510 Death Angels (USMC, but we didn't want to use 501st because of the 501st Legion many of us belong too)
SG-6 = 601st (no squadron)
SG-7 = 701st TSFS
SG-9 = 901st SFS Flying Tigers
SG-10 = 101st SFS Dragoons
SG-11 = 111st SFS Wraith ?
SG-12 = 121st (no squsdron)
SG-13 = 113th Death Vipers (should have been 131st but 113rd was granted by request)
SG-14 = 141st (no squadron)
SG-15 = 151st (no squadron)
SG-16 = 161st (no squadron)
SG-17 = 171st (no squadron)
SG-19 = 191st (no squadron)
SG-21 = 210th SFS Gate Keepers
SG-22 = VFS 221 Stargators
SG-23 = 231th (No Squadron)
SG-24 = 241th (Team not formed)
SG-25 = 251st Hailey Hellhounds
So in the case of SG-11, you could go with a second squadron designation of 112 or 1102 with whole new name.

I believe the F-302 may be named "Snakeskinner", although it's hard to be sure as I've also seen this applied to a squadron (would be appropriate for the first squadron to use the craft). In any case, it's the only name I've seen that could be associated to it.
The USAF does name it's aircraft. As mentioned, in WWII, some names did come from allies and that may well be how the naming started. Raptor is the official name for the F-22 . If it doesn't have a nickname yet, it'll have one soon. Other examples of names & unofficial nicknames:
A-10 Thinderbolt II aka Warthog
F-16 Fighting Falcon aka Viper (by those flying it) or Lawn Dart (by those who don't)
B-1 Lancer aka Bone
F-18 Hornet/Super Hornet aka Bug / SuperBug, although this seems to be more the in the press than from pilots.
I'm sure I know others, but my brain is too tired to recall them.
The F-111 had the nickname Aardvark long before it became official.

Well TK, you are the Commander of SG11, what do we need to do here? Or do we just go with a patch that says 111th with an F302 on it? (I am getting REALLY good with photoshop!).

I feel stupid...
I thought the aforre mentioned squadrons were in SG-1, and I chose to go as a member of the SG-5's squadron purely for the kick @$$ name. (Death Angels)
So...
What will SG-11's kick arse name be?

Just to recap, so far we have had the following submitted.
Wraith Wringers
Wraith Raiders
Soul Reavers
Soul Reapers
Skull Squadron
Black Death
Vermilion Squadron
New submissions...
Black Angels
Dark Avengers
Snake Stompers
(You know, snake as in Gao'uld. OK, move along.)
Ring Masters
(I like this one, because D*C is a circus!)
Any other new submissions, or should we vote from these?
For what its worth, I don't think we should use the word Wraith because I do not believe SG-11 is part of the Atlantis project. And we have therefore had very little contact with the Wraith. Furthermore, we should have a name that is universally intimidating to friend and foe alike. *devious grin*

Jen,
Although it's a good idea, I feel it important to mention that there is a real-life active-duty fighter squadron that uses it. The United States Navy's own Strike Fighter Squadron 103 (VFA-103), more commonly known as The Jolly Rogers, have flown consistently since World War II. Outside of service with The Blue Angels, serving in VFA-103 is considered an elite honor that few in Naval Aviation get.
Translation: No one asked me, but I think we (meaning all of the SG teams) need to stay away from using the names and insignia of any active-duty squadrons for our F-302 groups...

We originally had an issue and weren't going to be able to use the 111th designation. So we promptly switched to the 1011th. however if that issue is resolved which I assume it is, then we are the 111th.
This is the patch I had originally made up for us, it had several meanings hidden within it's simplistic design.
The four stars represented the original 4 man SG Team. Notice they form a line, a sort of last line of defense if you will. The wraith in the image is crossing this line, and being targeted because of it.
I can easily change the text across the bottom if needed.
