Just saw Disctrict 9. Neat movie, but I was wondering about the white armor being worn by a few people, as well as the "Colonel"character's gear, is either uniform correct for the S African military?

As far as I know nobody wears anything like the white armor seen in "District 9". It looked sort of like sort of hard armor, possibly ceramic but considering how much just a few plates weigh I can't imagine an entire vest made of ceramics would be all that practical. I suspect that it's something made for the movie though I could be wrong. I was considering doing a D9 merc get up but considering what kind of SOBs they were I'm not sure I'd really want to do it but then again I think I did see some people at D*Con dressed as some of those mercs.
I tried searching google, but try using the movie title. You'll get a LOT of stuff that's unrelated and hard to wade through.
The armor had me baffled, as there were plenty of things there I know for sure to be used by the SA military, and I couldn't help but wonder if they'd have gone to all that trouble for something that never existed.
Still, that white armor sure did look seriously impracticle, didn't it?

The fact that the body armor was fictional shouldn't be unexspected in a sci-fi, although I do love the effects for the alien weapons; within the story line it might have been addapted from alien technology, after all that was the main purpose of the Corporation throughout the film.
As for a MNU police costume, I have all the bits (minus the white assult rifle) but what they stood for "leaves me cold". We reviewed the movie over at MilSciFi.com

Ditto for me which is why I'm rather reluctant to seriously pursue an MNU merc or police costume although they did look pretty cool.

Vektor CR-21 – This is the “white” gun used by the MNU. The 5.56 mm CR-21 is a bullpup version of the Vektor R4. The R4 is the South African licensed-built version of the Israeli Galil (an AK-47 derivative).

Many thanks Donovich !!!

I find this gun very nice, and I will try to find an airsoft version, if I succeed, well, CX-4 will wait ^^

I hate to be the bringer of bad news to you but they don't currently make an airsoft version of the CR-21, you'll have to either scratch build one, modify an existing airsoft to resemble a CR-21, or just paint a similar looking bullpup (maybe the Tavor) white.

If this helps any I managed to get a halfway decent shot of the front of the white body armor the MNU mercs were wearing. It's only the front and doesn't go all the way down but it's the best pic that I've managed to find yet, I got it off the "official" MNU site of all places.

Thanks Rice.
For the CR-21, I just learnt it from a friend, will try to mod a Tavor yep.

Did you notice their card on the arm ? Will try to see if it's available on the MNU "official" website.
If not, your pic will be a great basis.
BTW thanks you. I love the first Alien weapon you posted, that fire a lightning which explode every human on its road.
Do you know there will probably be a sequel ?
I think I will try to make a MNU suit, because I really loved that film, SciFi and ethical questions.

The white armor is some sort of custom-made "hard armor" and it's white most likely for the same reasons the UN troops wear sky blue helmets, so they are easy to recognize at a distance.
Because 'friendly fire'... Isn't.

Pretty cool looking armor. Be better in pretty much any color other than white.

I just found a couple more pics of the MNU armor including one concept art/pre-production art of the armor courtesy of the RPF. This should help a bit for anyone wanting to create this armor.

Any ideas on what that handle on the back is for? Is it a quick release, a carry handle, or even something used by your team mates to drag you out of harms way?

No idea except that the thumbnail drawing in the upper right hand corner seems to suggest that it's hinged and folds in against the top of the armor. My guess would be that it's a folding drag handle for teammates to grab a hold of if they need to drag you away if you're downed, it probably also doubles as a convenient carry handle for either hanging or grabbing a hold of your armor.
At any rate, it looks like that the Weta drawing closely matches the screen used prop, close enough that combined with screencaps it should be enough to construct a replica if anyone wanted to.
I know this thread is old, but I picked up the DVD recently and really looked at the details. I got to wondering what kind of vests the civilians are wearing when serving the evictions. They have a MNU patch in black on the front and what looks like an interesting patch on the back that actually has a phone # you can call to complain (along with an open space I guess to write down your personal info on). It’d be neat to put something like that together with a MNU ID card as a simple costume…

I found a copy of the
book Weta put out on the design work for the movie over the weekend. I wasn’t too interested in the alien character designs, but there’s a lot of good info on the hardware. The armor was made for the movie, they designed and built it all. The main character has his own set of a slightly different design, but they decided to give him a standard vest so he wouldn’t stand out as much. There’s a LOT of neat stuff in there if you liked the film. They even showed the final designs on the “phone number” notifications which leads me to believe it was a sticker and not a patch. Beats me how they mounted it on the vest, if it was a sticker I guess they just slapped it on there. If I work with a sign company maybe I could re-create one and have one or two made, that is if I can find the right kind of vest used to make it worth my while. Just wearing the vest with nice business clothes would make one heck of an easy costume!

The "civilian" vest design doesn't look like it would be too hard to fabricate. A little nylon, some foam to simulate plates and to add some bulk, and some velcro and you're done.
